Living for
Christ in college
Throughout
the years, many sisters in college have reached out to me sharing the struggles
of trying to live for Christ while in college. College is a place where your
faith will be tested. You're no longer under your parent's supervision. You no
longer are told to go to church. Your'e free to make your own decisions. Though
it may be hard to live for Christ in college, it's not impossible. Christ needs
young women who will be set apart and stand on His word, show His love, be unashamed of His gospel and a be a light on
college campuses across the world. This blog is to encourage my sisters that
you can live for Christ in college!
1. Don't
believe lies
For many
believers, college can be a hard time. The enemy and your peers will make you
feel like your'e missing out. Everyone else is out partying, getting drunk,
high, dating and sleeping around while your'e trying to live for Christ. You
may find yourself feeling lonely, isolated, and ostracized. People may even
think you're weird or lame because you don't partake in the same activities as
everyone else. You may even face persecution for your faith. Remember, you are
not of this world. One of my favorite quotes, "I rather be an outcast now
than get cast out later!" The narrow way isn't popular, but it's worth it.
Nothing can compare to the joy and peace that comes from a life that is
obedient and fully surrender to Christ. Take it from someone who rebelled
against God and partied their life away in college. (Read my My testimony) Don't believe the lies sis.
Life in the world looks glamorous, but it's all a visage. The partying, drugs,
sex, and relationships cannot fill that void that you have. We desperately need
Christ!
2.
Surround yourself with Godly friends
1
Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived,"Bad company corrupts good
morals."
Women of God should be loving, friendly, welcoming and cordial to everyone. However, we must be very selective of our close friends. It's so imperative that we
surround ourselves with sisters who love and fear the Lord. We can't afford to have friends who are encouraging us to sin against
God and do things that are contrary to His word. Imagine you trying to live for Christ but you
have friends who are full of drama and constantly pressuring you to hook up with guys and attend
parties. We need Godly friends who we can confess our sins to, be
accountable to, sharpen us, correct us when we're wrong, pray with us when we're
struggling, tell us the truth in love and who will ultimately push us closer to Christ!
3.Don't
compromise
2 Timothy
2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and
peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Sis,
don't compromise your Godly standards to fit in. Don't dim your light to get
the approval of people. Don't compromise and date a guy who doesn't love
Christ. I know the struggle is real, it seems like everyone has a bae but
you..but sis, you can't change him! This
guy will lead you away from Christ and you'll end up heartbroken. Flee sin and
cling to Christ. Protect your purity. Guard your heart. Don't flirt with sin or
think you can handle it. We can only do this by the power of the Holy Spirit,
not human effort. So many times we think we are stronger that what we are.
Trust me we are not. We can't handle it. No matter how long you've been saved.
No matter how long you've been celibate. No matter how many scriptures you
know. You can't handle it! The flesh is weak. Don't put yourself in
compromising situations where you can fall in sin. Proverbs 6:27 Can a man take fire in his
bosom And his clothes not be burned?
We must
be wise ladies. I understand that we're not perfect but remember
that we represent Christ. Some things may not necessarily be a sin, but is it
wise? Don't lose your witness and don't allow your good to be evil spoken
of. The streets are watching. Your peers
won't take you serious if one minute your'e trying to witness to them about
Christ, then the next minute your'e doing the same things that they're doing. Be wise!
Romans
14:16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil.
1
Corinthians 10;23 All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All
things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
4. Stay
grounded in the word
Psalm
119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Being in
our word as believers isn't an option. We cannot be self-sufficient and think
we can coexist apart from Christ. We must cling to Him tightly and feast upon
His word. We must set aside a time to study the word and pray. The word
strengthens us, comforts us, transforms us, convicts us and gives us the power
to overcome sin. Let's be honest, no one is going to "feel" like
reading their word all the time. We have to be real and ask God to give us the
desire. We must deny our flesh and not allow for our feelings to control us.
5. Use
your time wisely
Sis, use
your time wisely because we can never get time back. Don't look back on your
college years and realize that you wasted time. Be fruitful and leverage your
time. Your college campus is a mission field. There are so many people from all
walks of life who don't know Christ. Pray for opportunities to share the gospel
and make disciples. Join a campus ministry or even start one! (If you're
interested in starting a High heels and High standards campus ministry email
me!:-) Serve your community, volunteer, mentor, join clubs, or do an
internship. Most importantly, find a solid bible teaching church where you can
be edified and grow. It is also great to have an older sister at church who can
mentor you and pour into you!
6. Have
fun!
Ecclesiastes
8:15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a
person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany
them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
Sis make the most of your time in college! Just because your'e a
Christian doesn't mean you have to be stiff and boring. Connect with other
young Christians in your area. Evangelize. Make disciples. Travel. Live. Think outside the box. Understand
that in your walk with Christ there will be victories and there will be
failings. Sometimes you'll be on the mountain tops and other times you'll be in
the valley. No matter what season you find yourself in, keep your eyes on Christ because He is faithful. If you fall or make
unwise decisions learn from them. Don't sink in condemnation and run back to
the world. Repent and run back to the arms of your loving Father!
I hope
that this blog can encourage my sisters who are in high school or college.
Please share with other ladies that you know. Though it may be hard, it's not
impossible to live for Christ in college. Sis, if you have gotten out of the
race it's time to get back in. Remember your purpose while at college. Remember
you are there to glorify God, to be a light and get an education. Don't lose
focus. Love you sis stay encouraged!
